A small mountain town 28km east of Sam Neua. Very chill, nice landscaping around stilted homes, tons of little lakes hosting dragon boat practice and races, bright orange wildflowers, limestone mountain creations surround the town. Very good spot. We based ourselves in Sam Neua (mainly because it was the only bank within hours) this made for excellent day trips riding thru the twisting mountains on a motorbike. Stopping in villages, checking out a crazy waterfall, swimming in cold, fresh river water, discovering caves, watching boating events, kids play in the lake and women shower and do laundry. Chickens, water buffalo, goats and boar wander around in the road. All the women and girls wear locally woven and embroidered wraps skirts and carry woven triangular backpacks of sorts. Extremely friendly people. Everyone has an umbrella. No more conical woven hats for the sun, it’s umbrellas. And no standard white rice, all sticky rice – which now that I’ve properly had it, I am a huge fan. Beerlao and rice wine shots. Cool misty mornings giving way come noon a piercing sun, vibrant blue sky and poufy white clouds. Then pitch black nights with cool breezes and twinkling stars.
I am very pleased to be in Laos.
