Some nice geological formations here. Shooting out of the ground another section of the Drakensberg Mountain Range. The landscape here is a large exposure. You’ve never spent so much time looking and seeing. Turing your head from here to there takes an eon because your eyes get stuck on so much shit, it’d be like swimming in jelly, that you find things take just a big longer to get done because everybody is spending their time just looking around. They have made a spectacle of every natural land formation and have built a little gates in front of each to allow you the privilege to see things at a price which should be free but is helping the community or a small group of people anyway spend money. We decided to pay them later.
Awesome gorge. The rock is the same as it was in the Karoo with its soft red rocky appearance they way it molds into curving chunks of mashed together mountains. Don’t know what the rock is either sandstone or limestone or both. In the river the stone will wash white and its so soft that it will create perfectly round pools and cut outs from where the water falls on to it. It looks like swiss cheese. 2 hours down to a section of the river we could swim in and then 2 hours back. It was a good day hike. I was exhausted at the end.

This is a key area to have right outside Kruger game park because by the time you’ve nearly atrophied your body from sitting in a car so long looking for animals you are ready for some good hiking and big, deep open spaces. Just like this gorge. Canyon. Since hiking in Australia we’ve been stumped by the difference between a gorge and a canyon, both of which we have hiked numerous times on these travels, and not known the difference. I recently turned to Google and Wikipedia, turns out there’s no difference, the words are inter-changable. Pretty lame, huh? I was disappointed.
This canyon, or gorge, has some beautiful lookouts from the top rim and decent hiking down to the river. We had some nice nights camping too. Minus a cheeky monkey who stole my pineapple and 2 loaves of Dawn’s bread. Rascal. We tried twice over a week to see ‘God’s Window’ and both times we were in the pits of fog! Supposed to be killer views. Anyway, it was good to spend a couple days around here and stretch the legs.
